About
85' Jim Smith Convertible Sportfish 2006
As one of Stuart, Florida's legendary custom boatbuilders, innovative Jim Smith was known for his extremely fast sportfishing boats that outperformed all others back in 1959. Having a background in building and racing his own hydroplanes, he applied his knowledge of airplane construction and hydroplanes to build his first boat, "Boca Jima," a 35ft sportfishing boat inspired by the beautiful Rybovich and Merritt boats he encountered and admired when deep sea fishing in South Florida after he retired from his businesses in 1949. Jim Smith was also known for his game-changing, ground-breaking innovations in the construction method and for pushing the size-envelope of sportfishing yachts. He is credited with constructing the first cold-molded hull. After reading about a new material, epoxy resin in Popular Mechanics, he realized it could be applied to marine construction and used double-diagonal cedar planking combined with epoxy resin to construct "Boca Jima," giving her the strong lightweight hull capable of 44 knots, when all the others maxed out at 25 knots! Jim Smith Boats went on to build boats that were fast, efficient, and seaworthy. Today, under John Vance's leadership and ownership, Jim Smith Boats are not only fast, but are designed and engineered for excellent ride quality. As a custom builder, owners are completely involved with the interior design and layout, cockpit and bridge set-up--anything that doesn't interfere with engineering or structure. "SILKY," with enclosed bridge and skybridge is an excellent performing, sumptuous sportfish yacht with unique custom features for long range cruising and fishing in true convertible style.
