About
2021 Aquila 54 Power Catamaran Yacht 2021, BLESSED
Roll stability is an inherent advantage of multihulls, but Aquila cruising catamarans have the unique advantage of the foot-long bulbs that extend forward from the bows just below the waterline and are integrated into the hulls. The bulbs modify flow of water around the bow to reduce drag and greatly improve ride comfort—no more “hobby-horsing” as the forward motion is transformed to be a gentle and efficient dolphin-like motion. Originally designed and engineered in 2016, the bulbs have been refined from the bullet shape to a more pointed and streamlined shape to minimize hull pitch, provide additional buoyancy, and increase speed, which in turn, enhances fuel efficiency and range. BLESSED has the upgraded 480hp Volvo Penta D6 diesels that provide a cruising speed of 15-18 knots and hit a top speed of 22-25 knots. According to a boat test of the Aquila 54 in 2021, cruising at trawler speed 7.8 knots, with a fuel capacity of 765 gallons, her range was about 957 nautical miles. Other variables, such as load, and sea conditions can impact range as well as speed.
The Aquila 54 hulls were designed with a raked bow and sharp entry, instead of the typical vertical plumb catamaran bow, allowing her to plane and cut through chop. The high hulls with molded chines and spray rails deflect spray for a drier ride and enhance stability, much like modified-V planing monohulls. Another feature of this seaworthy hull design is the increased clearance of the tunnel between the two hulls and a wave splitter at the top center of the tunnel to knock down bow waves, reducing wave interference and slamming. Prop tunnels help reduce drag and draft to 4.5ft for cruising shallower islands waters. And with her increased liveaboard and entertainment space, it's no wonder the Aquila 54 was awarded “Multihull of the Year”!
