In a time when digital technology is moving at a rapid pace, transforming our lives and jobs, finding media-free time to spend with family and friends is more challenging than ever. Ian is a firm believer that if you’re fortunate enough to have the time, health, and finances that allow for private yacht ownership, there is no better way to create lasting memories with family and friends than time spent together on the water.
Currently based in Southern California, Ian McGhie originally hails from Portland, Oregon. From a young age, he enjoyed fishing and sailing on the rivers, lakes, and along the coast of Oregon. Ian’s Scottish and Finnish ancestors were mostly shipbuilders, and his father served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, which contributed to Ian’s fascination with maritime history and deep respect for the ocean, along with the lives of those who have worked and lived upon it.
After attending Montana State University and Portland State University, Ian’s first job as a yacht broker was at Seaward Yacht Sales, the Grand Banks dealer for Portland and Seattle. This job helped forge his lifelong connection to Grand Banks, which had begun from a boat show in 1979 and continues today. In 1996, Ian moved to Grand Yachts Northwest, the Northwest dealer for Viking Yachts, and thus began his 25-year relationship with Viking.
In 1998, Ian made the move to Southern California, where he started his 22-year career at Stan Miller Yachts, now known as Galati Yacht Sales. He is a licensed salesperson in the state of California. Having represented Cabo, Grand Banks, Hatteras, Krogen, Sabre, and Viking, Ian has earned a reputation for attention to detail and loyal service. He has developed long-lasting relationships with clients, shipyards, surveyors, and dealers from Vancouver, B.C., to San Diego.
He has a deep understanding of the various needs and requirements that different regions require from specific boats and designs. He understands that when you represent the best in the business, your reputation is on the line each and every time. Ian is a connector, and his relationship-focused approach to life and business has earned him the credibility and trust of his extensive network.
In his free time, Ian enjoys sailing his vintage Hinckley and cruising his 32 Grand Banks. He is an avid supporter of the junior sailing program at Long Beach Yacht Club, where his son is a competitive Sabot and FJ sailor.
