Terrapin is a cutter-rigged sailboat that was designed by Bob Perry and manufactured by Uniflite in Seattle, WA in 1982. Baxter and Molly are the third owners, purchasing her in 2013 in Waukegan, IL. The first owner commissioned her and the second owner sailed her for many years with his family, on trips to Bermuda and kept her in fresh water on Lake Michigan.
Terrapin has a genoa head sail, a staysail and a mainsail, all on furlers. This allows her to be configured to be sailed in light wind as well as heavy weather, while being short-handed from the cockpit. In addition, a custom spinnaker was made with the Terrapin logo. All sails were built in 2016 by Ullman sails in Deltaville, Virginia.
Terrapin is very comfortable offshore with a cockpit enclosure that allows for access to all navigation and piloting controls, 360 views around the boat as well as a vent for the Webasto forced-air heater. In warmer climates, the canvas can be removed for comfortable air flow and venting. The cockpit has 3 inch cushions for all seating areas as well as pfifertex covers for all cubbies. In addition, Terrapin has two autopilots - one electronic Raymarine autopilot as well as a mechanical Monitor autopilot.
Terrapin is designed primarily as a 12volt boat, relying very little on access to 110 shore power or to an additional inboard generator, though a Westerbeke generator and inverter is installed and readily accessible. The current owners designed Terrapin for self-sufficient cruising with an AirBreeze wind generator, Solar panels which would maintain sufficient power to keep the batteries charged. In addition, a portable RainMan watermaker is on board to fill the fresh-water tanks, powered by a small Honda generator. (included in the sale)
Terrapin has a 88lb/44 kilo Rocna anchor, which sets well and provides peace of mind in strong conditions. In addition, dock lines and moorings are easy to manage with strong flush-fitting cleats and howsers that can be closed when not in use for walking space on deck.
Terrapin's interior is comfortable and has good amenities with a new propane 3-burner stove, a galley that provides secure space while offshore and ample storage for spares while crossing oceans.
Terrapin has two cabins, each with a full head and shower. In addition, there are multiple hanging closets, drawer storage and lockers in each cabin for storage.
The salon is comfortable with a table that folds away and can be used on starboard or port. The settees can be expanded to become additional beds for passengers.
The current owners have sailed Terrapin comfortably on two Atlantic crossings and adventures from the Arctic Circle in Norway and south to the Cape Verdes islands off the coast of Africa. Their travels as well as many of the upgrades to Terrapin are documented on their YouTube channel.
