DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION:
The builder brochure for the 49DS describes the design objectives as “volume and comfort” and there is a good measure of truth in that advertising. The Sun Oydessey 49 DS was conceived using the Deck Salon concept of her big sister, the 54 DS. Likewise, she adopts the teardrop-shaped windows, Philippe Briand performance-oriented hull design and the new generation deck lines created by Vittorio Garroni. All of which ensures the boat is not only elegant but comfortable at sea.
Hull is hand-laid and molded FRP with a white gel coat surface. FRP longitudinal stringers, and structural bulkheads bonded to the hull. Reverse transom “sugar scoop” molded-in swim platform. End grain balsa cored FRP deck with solid glass sections in high load areas. “Shoebox” type full to deck flange via elastomeric compound. Cast iron fin keel with bulb. Spade rudder.
