Marcelina is a Reliance 44 ketch designed by Pierre Meunier and built by the Reliance Sailing Co in Montreal. Forty six of these seaworthy well-built hulls were built starting in 1972, and this one was built in 1978.

| Notable Upgrades: This ketch sleeps seven. Starting forward in the cabin with an off-center double berth in the forward stateroom, outboard shelving, and a large overhead hatch for natural light and ventilation. A door separates the stateroom from the main cabin. Next aft to port is the large enclosed head with a porcelain sink with hot & cold pressure water, large mirror, a C-Head composting toilet, overhead hatch and opening port, and varnished cabinets and lockers. A bright and clean space. Across to starboard from the head is a large locker In the main cabin to port is a wrap-around cushioned settee with a pedestal table, which converts to a double berth. Next aft on the port side is a U-shaped galley with a quartz granite composite sink with hot & cold pressure water, refrigerator, and propane stove with 2 burners and an oven. Aft of the galley is a double quarter berth with storage below. To starboard in the main cabin is a Dickinson propane heater, a long cushioned settee/berth with shelves and lockers outboard, followed by a large hanging locker, a navigation station, and an aft storage compartment and work space. Up several steps to the cockpit. The large cockpit seats several with a varnished coaming and a stainless steel wrap-around stern rail that houses solar panel & life ring. The mizzen mast is in the forward cockpit followed by the Navpod pedestal and rail mount instrument housings (2021) and the helm wheel. Mounted on the transom is a Hydrovane self-steering windvane, 2023. Large winches are on the aft decks, port and starboard, and blocks and clutches bring halyards and sail handling lines to the cockpit, 2022. Sunbrella dodger and bimini, with integrated solar panel, are fitted to the cockpit, 2020. Heading to the foredeck are lifelines outboard and handrails inboard along both decks. A large solar panel is mounted on the cabin top. On the foredeck is the anchor pulpit, stainless steel bow rail, anchor windlass, chocks, two furling forestays for both jibs, and a large hatch with a cover to the forward stateroom. |

Marcelina is a Reliance 44 ketch designed by Pierre Meunier and built by the Reliance Sailing Co in Montreal. Forty six of these seaworthy well-constructed hulls were built starting in 1972, and this one was built in 1978. Most all boats were finished by their original owners so no two have the same layout. The current owner purchased Marcelina in 2015 and has recently outfitted her with an electric motor, batteries, and solar panels, along with new sails, electronics, rigging, and much more. Construction
Built by the Reliance Sailing Craft Co. of Montreal, Canada, in 1978, this hull has a 1" balsa core between fiberglass layers with solid fiberglass at the chainplates (new), deck fittings, and the keel. Meunier was one of the first builders to utilize temperature and humidity controls during the layup, thus these hulls have maintained their strength and integrity through the years.
During the current owner's ownership (2015 - 2023), he has done an extensive refit throughout the ketch. The main structural work consisted of the following:
- Replaced the corroded internal chainplates with new 316SS external chainplates secured with 3/4" G10 engineered fiberglass/epoxy panels generously fiberglassed to the inside of the hull.
- The decks have been inspected and approximately 50% of the balsa core has been replaced with synthetic core and re-glassed. Non-skid surfaces on all decks, and cockpit sole and seats.
- A grid was created under the sole for rigidity.
- Moved the center bulkheads about a foot aft to accommodate an improved cabin layout.
Tanks
Water: 150 gallons in two tanks. The third and forward tank is currently leaking and not being used.
Holding: 30-gallon tank but not hooked up or being used, as the composting toilet is self contained
Sails and Rigging
Aluminum Spars all in good condition with a 2022 Spar Craft main boom with a rigid vang, and with internal blocks for single-line reefing.

Kathe grew up in the village of Manset in Southwest Harbor, Maine, in and out of her father's and grandfather's boat shops and on the water in various vessels. Sailing at girls' camps and on the family boats were a large part of summers with family and friends. From the late '60s through early '80s, the family summer vacation was going to the Friendship Sloop Races in Friendship Harbor on the family sloop. Plus many sails and power boat picnics on island beaches. Kathe and her husband, Dan, live on Mount Desert Island and have five grown children and several grandchildren. They both are USCG Master Captains and enjoy working and recreating on the water.
