Construction
This boat is a new building technique of a wooden hull and a fiberglass deck assembly, the opposite of what has been previously built using the combination of fiberglass and wood. And the idea is a smart one in that the effects of sun, fresh water, and weather in general react negatively with the natural movement of wooden decks and superstructure more than they will with fiberglass. And the wooden hull in the salt water will give the natural flotation and steadiness that make going through the water more comfortable and enjoyable.
The wooden hull is 1 1/4" cedar planking over 1 1/2" x 2 3/4" oak frames, 9" on center. Silicon bronze fastened. The keel is 7" wide. The 1 1/2" thick Douglas fir platform is 22' L x 14' W with 4 Anchor aluminum rectangular deck plates with stainless steel trim rings and 3 round 9" hatches--two over fuel tank fills and 1one over engine coolant fill. 4 custom stainless steel deck cleats by Harrison Pinkham. 1/8" stainless steel trap sheathing on starboard side fastened with stainless steel screws with zinc. Stainless steel corner guard on starboard transom. Solid Stainless steel half-oval. Transom scuppers.
Custom fiberglass house and deck assembly is close-celled foam cored fiberglass, fastened to hull with stainless steel screws, built by Scott Edgerly of Surry. Teak handrails. 13" washrails. Bomar square windows with opening helm windshield. 7' headroom at helm.

Kathe grew up in the village of Manset in Southwest Harbor, Maine, in and out of her father's and grandfather's boat shops and on the water in various vessels. Sailing at girls' camps and on the family boats were a large part of summers with family and friends. From the late '60s through early '80s, the family summer vacation was going to the Friendship Sloop Races in Friendship Harbor on the family sloop. Plus many sails and power boat picnics on island beaches. Kathe and her husband, Dan, live on Mount Desert Island and have five grown children and several grandchildren. They both are USCG Master Captains and enjoy working and recreating on the water.
