CONSTRUCTION
Kittiwake is one of the 588 of these Sabre 28s built between 1971 - 1986 in South Casco, Maine. Designed by Roger Hewson and the Sabre team, the Sabre Company built them with quality workmanship and materials. The hull is hand-laid matt and roving fiberglass construction, and the deck assembly was built with a core of balsa for stiffness and less weight than solid glass. Each hull is built with an internal flange that is bedded and bolted to the deck assembly. The lead fin keel and skeg-hung rudder complete the hull construction. The deck hardware, including stanchions, pupit, and cleats are thru-bolted and backed with aluminum plates. A vinyl rib rail and teak toe rail surround the outboard decks.

Two reading lights port and starboard, shelving outboard, and a hanging locker to starboard. An opening cabintop hatch and two port lights provide good natural light and ventilation.
Through the door next aft is the enclosed head with marine flush to port, and the sink is to starboard.
In the main cabin are settees/berths port and starboard with outboard shelving. The dining table is mounted on the port forward bulkhead with an oil light outboard. The starboard bulkhead has an electric light mounted with a storage hatch and berth extension.
In the aft main cabin is the galley to starboard with a 2-burner alcohol stove, ice box, Formica covered counter, and outboard shelves, drawers and lockers for storage below. To starboard is a quarter berth. The cabin headroom is 5'11" with attractive teak woodwork and cabin sole. Eight ports, one opening, and an opening cabintop hatch provide good light and ventilation.
Up the companionway steps is the cockpit which offers (new) cushioned seating for several with storage lockers underneath. The pedestal helm also holds electronics, engine controls, GPS, and compass. Four winches are mounted port and starboard on the aft cabintop and on mid-cockpit supports for lines and halyards, along with several stainless steel cleats. The stern stainless steel rail wraps around to then connect with the lifelines with two gates that run up to the bow stainless steel rail. A dodger and custom cockpit cover are included. Kathe grew up in the village of Manset in Southwest Harbor, Maine, in and out of her father's and grandfather's boat shops and on the water in various vessels. Sailing at girls' camps and on the family boats were a large part of summers with family and friends. From the late '60s through early '80s, the family summer vacation was going to the Friendship Sloop Races in Friendship Harbor on the family sloop. Plus many sails and power boat picnics on island beaches. Kathe and her husband, Dan, live on Mount Desert Island and have five grown children and several grandchildren. They both are USCG Master Captains and enjoy working and recreating on the water.
