Every painting or sculpture starts out with a few simple lines on paper, canvas, wood or stone by their creators who then, through a lifetime of experience, raw talent and an embrace of the future, produce what everyone agrees to be a masterpiece. Such is the story of Uncle Roy.
When first acquired by her current owner this 1929, Stephens Brothers 34’ Trunk Cabin Cruiser was considered to be beyond repair but beneath the rotting wood and flaking paint he could see those few simple lines that would serve as the basis for the masterpiece that is Uncle Roy.
In 2017, what would become Uncle Roy was trucked to the Brooklin, Maine shop of boat builder Eric Dow where over the course of almost two years the boat was taken down to its bare bones, then pains-takingly restored to the highest standards of traditional wooden boat construction and brought into the future with thoughtful design improvements and state of the art equipment all while retaining the look and feel of a classic motor yacht that would be equally at home back in 1929 or into the future another lifetime from now.

Interior, Pilot House and Cockpit Layout and Accommodations (bow to stern)
Furthest forward is chain locker followed by (forward) sleeping cabin with accommodations for two (2) persons in a V-berth configuration. V-berths are generous width and 6’-4” long so forward V-berth is equivalent to queen sized bed with storage lockers and bins under V-berth. All sleeping locations have accessory shelves and dual function outlets –USB & 120V & individually switched wall sconce lighting.
Next aft is the main saloon with port and starboard 6’4” extra wide sectional settee/berths. Storage lockers and bins under settees. There are also tables port and starboard on telescoping pedestals that drop down to be flush with top of the settee and cushions that go on top of the lowered tables to create full length berths. Additionally, there is a middle section of the table that attaches to the port and starboard sections to make a “one piece” table with the pedestals extend up to proper table height. The tabletop is a slab of particularly attractive burled maple with the grain running continuously through the top (except for section cuts). Continuing aft (to port) in the main saloon is a private head space and limited galley area on centerline and the companionway (to starboard) leading aft and up to the pilot house area.
Cabin interior is combination of varnished teak and quartersawn douglas fir with a Waterlox matte finish.
Interior and exterior teak joinery and beams are finished in varnish and painted wood ceilings.
Bronze rim latches for head door and forward cabin.
The upper pilot house area provides shelter from the elements while at the same time allowing the helmsman and passengers excellent visibility to their surrounds with a 3-bay windshield forward and 2-bay side windows port and starboard. In particularly inclement weather the pilot house can be fully enclosed with aft drop-down canvas and isinglass enclosure curtains.
Teak helm seat and built-in seating fore and aft on the engine box allow for seating for five (5) persons in the Pilot House enclosure and more seating available with a removable, full-width teak bench seat at in the stern.
Other cockpit features include cockpit coamings of laminated teak, five (5) Bowmar water-tight deck hatches allowing access to under deck storage and machinery, live well/ice chest under cockpit floor with aerator pump and discharge pump, ten (10) thru deck fishing rod holders, concealed below gunwale rod storage, and additional rid storage on pilot house ceiling.
All miscellaneous hardware fittings and features are antique or vintage components exclusively in Bronze, of similar age or older than Uncle Roy.
Teak paneling in cockpit is original as is door to cabin. Only clear fir or teak was used in the finish cabinetry and millwork.

John joined Brooklin Boat Yard in 2004. Using his expertise and experience in used boat brokerage sales he established a successful used boat brokerage operation. Also, in 2004 John started the development of a racing program for the Brooklin Boat Yard built 76’ Spirit of Tradition Goshawk resulting in podium finishes in the 2005 Marblehead to Halifax Race, the 2006 Newport to Bermuda Race and equally impressive performances in classic yacht regattas here in Maine and Southern New England.
John continues to race in local mixed fleet races and Classic Yacht Regattas mostly on boats built by Brooklin Boat Yard and notably as “the world’s oldest bowman” on the Brooklin Boat Yard built Eggemoggin 47 Lynnette from 2013 to 2021 and occasional guest appearances on sister-ship Lark.
Today, John continues to manage and expand the brokerage operation but can just as likely be seen out in the yard or on the water helping the rigging and yard crews in the busy Spring and Fall launching and hauling seasons.
