Description
A good-looking small yacht with a distinctive profile, the Wellcraft Californian 38 Motor Yacht is built on a conservative low-deadrise hull with a moderate beam, a three-quarter-length skeg keel, and relatively flat after sections. Hull construction is solid fiberglass. Her floorplan is arranged with double berths fore and aft, and both heads are fitted with separate stall showers. If the salon dimensions are somewhat limited, the master stateroom is very roomy for a 38-footer. A sliding deck access door is adjacent to the lower helm station—a worthwhile feature. Galley Up layout. Hinged steps in the forward companionway provide access to a particularly well-designed engine room with good working space outboard of the motors. A bow pulpit, radar arch, teak handrails, and a swim platform were standard. "Backlash" has the upgraded Cat 3208 300hp and will fast cruise around 15 knots. Californian History
Californian Yachts was founded in the 1970s by Jule Marshall and Myrna Elliott who revolutionized the trawler and motor yacht industry. Through the years, Californian Yachts has undergone several ownership changes. Marshall sold the company to Wellcraft Marine in 1980 but continued to build some vessels for Wellcraft before reacquiring the brand in 1984. Marshall sold the company again in 1986, this time to the Carver Corporation, and concentrated on starting his next company, Navigator Yachts, with his two sons. In 1991, Marshall once again purchased Californian Yachts.
