Description
The Spencer 44 Ketch is a classic blue water sailing yacht renowned for its rugged construction, graceful lines, and exceptional seaworthiness. Designed by John Brandlmayr and built by Spencer Boats in Canada, it embodies the timeless elegance of traditional ketch-rigged cruisers.
With a solid fibreglass hull and a well-balanced sail plan, the Spencer 44 delivers a smooth and stable ride, ideal for extended offshore voyages. Her deep, comfortable cockpit provides excellent protection, while the spacious interior features rich woodwork, ample storage, and a practical layout designed for live-aboard comfort.
Like many, this Spencer was owner finished and highly customized. The original owner (one of only two throughout its entire lifetime) intended to use the vessel as a large “daysailor” for family outing and weekend cruises. The second owners have continued this trend stating that the combination of large clear decks, secure center cockpit and easily handled ketch rig are as valuable a trait for entertaining larger groups and novice guests as they are for safely voyaging offshore.
The decision to optimize for short range sailing meant that there was less demand for complex systems and expensive, seldom used, luxuries. While this means Tamar C. lacks some of the typical equipment encountered when inspecting older boats, it also means there are no dirty, malfunctioning, jury rigged systems to troubleshoot, dispose of, or replace. Given the advances in performance and energy consumption, who wants to pay for someone’s old electronics and refrigeration?
Tamar C. is a “project boat”, however unlike most projects, she clean and fully found. No need to toil for weeks or months to get underway. No need for replacing expensive gear or undertaking repairs to hull or deck to be seaworthy. No sleeping on sailbags while rebuilding an interior.
The Spencer 44 Ketch was designed as a true ocean voyager. Her comfort ratio and seaworthiness make her an ideal platform for Bluewater-liveaboard. Tamar C. is an excellent example of the class and is ready for final fitting out before casting off.
If you’re interested in a well designed offshore cruiser in sound condition at an fraction of the replacement cost please contact Sunnybrook Yachts to arrange your viewing.
