Full Details
Built by Cabo Rico Yachts, the Northeast 400 carries the hallmarks of quality construction for which the yard is known. The hull is fiberglass with a vinylester resin outer layer to resist osmotic blistering. The deck is similarly well-built, using solid glass in high-load areas, and is securely bonded and through-bolted to the hull, resulting in a robust and long-lasting structure.
Measuring just under 42 feet in length overall, with a beam of nearly 14 feet and a moderate draft of around 4'10", the Northeast 400 offers a roomy and stable ride. Displacing about 21,900 pounds, it carries over 6,800 pounds of ballast, giving it a solid, capable feel under sail. Its fin keel and skeg-hung rudder ensure tracking and maneuverability, while a 100-horsepower Yanmar diesel engine allows for consistent and efficient motoring—even in challenging conditions. Under power, the boat can cruise comfortably at 8 to 10 knots, and under sail, speeds of 7 to 9 knots are common in moderate winds.
One of the most distinguishing features of the Northeast 400 is its pilothouse layout. Unlike many sailboats that feel dark and cave-like below deck, this yacht’s raised saloon is bright and spacious, with large windows that offer excellent visibility and allow natural light to flood the interior. This space doubles as a second helm station, meaning the boat can be comfortably piloted from inside during inclement weather—making it ideal for extended cruising in varied climates.
The accommodations are particularly well-suited for liveaboard cruising. Most models feature a forward master stateroom with a centerline queen berth, often with a hydraulic lift to access storage underneath. A second cabin, typically midship, can serve as a guest stateroom, home office, or additional storage area. The galley is well-appointed and secure for cooking underway, while the spacious saloon offers comfortable seating, ample storage, and a warm, inviting atmosphere thanks to extensive teak joinery finished in a rich satin varnish.
Systems aboard the Northeast 400 are designed for autonomy and extended cruising. The fuel tank capacity is around 150 gallons, while freshwater tanks hold over 220 gallons—more than enough for long trips away from the dock. Electrical systems and tank monitoring are typically well-integrated, with some later models boasting comprehensive instrumentation and energy-efficient lighting upgrades.
Only around a couple of dozen Northeast 400s were ever built, making them a rare find on the brokerage market. This limited production adds to their appeal, especially among knowledgeable sailors who value a boat that is both distinctive and capable. Owners often note that the boat holds its value well and continues to deliver a high level of comfort, performance, and safety—even decades after launch.
In summary, the Cabo Rico Northeast 400 is a refined, well-executed motorsailer designed for serious cruising. It offers the charm and build quality of a traditional bluewater sailboat, with the comfort and flexibility of a pilothouse motor yacht. Whether you’re exploring tropical islands, or wintering in the ICW, it’s a vessel that makes few compromises and rewards thoughtful ownership.
Accomodations
- Forward on Calypso is an island double bunk in the owners' cabin. There are gas cylinders that lift the forward bunk upward to provide enormous storage space under and it is very easy to lift and close. A large hanging locker, a linen locker, , open lockers, bookshelves and special drawers provide exceptional storage in the forward cabin. This cabin has teak ceilings and a cedar hanging locker. There is a large head with ceramic shell sink, custom lockers head and dual entrance to the owners' stateroom as well as a separate entrance to the rest of the boat. A new electric toilet with waste tank monitor were recently installed
- The library/den features a love seat that can be made up into a very large single for that extra bunk. There is a writing desk, special cabinets and a standing liquor locker with wine glasses, tumblers and a large book storage above. A new flat screen TV is included for those rainy movie nights. The library/den is the signature of the Northeast 400 and Calypso has a very attractive and well thought out plan.

Some of Mike’s earliest childhood memories are boating on Lake Ontario aboard his family’s 1949 Chris-Craft Sedan Cruiser. At a relatively young age, he also developed a passion for sailing and began dinghy racing in a variety of different classes.
As a teenager, Mike gained much experience touring the Great Lakes aboard Sail Training Vessels where he learned ship handling, navigation and marlinspike seamanship.
Sometime later, he signed on as a Watch Leader with the 150’ British Sail Training Schooner’s the Sir Winston Churchill and the Malcom Miller, on voyages that took him to ports in many European countries bordering the North Sea, including an eventful voyage from Denmark to England in a Force 10 gale.
This experience combined with a two-year course in Marine Technology helped Mike earn certification in Coastal Navigation, Celestial Navigation and D.O.T. Marine Emergency Duties.
After a brief stint managing a Charter Boat operation on Manitoulin Island, Mike agreed to deliver a 1947 48’ Elco Motor Yacht from Toronto to Florida via Chicago, and the Tombigbee and Mississippi river systems.
What was supposed to be a one-month delivery turned out to be a three-year, 20,000 mile adventure up and down the eastern seaboard and through-out the Bahamas. It was during this time in his early 20’s that Mike acquired his USCG 100-Ton OUPV Masters license.
As time went on, Mike eventually made a transition from Captain to Yacht Broker, and then business owner.
Today, Mike is well recognized in the marine industry by fellow yacht brokers, business associates and boating enthusiasts. He serves on the Certification Advisory Committee for the Certified Professional Yacht Broker program, is a past member of the Board of Directors for the Yacht Brokers Association of America and Boating Ontario, and also serves on an advisory committee for the Toronto International Boat Show.
Mike is also a contributing writer for several national boating publications, including Power Boating Canada, and is a past producer/host for a regular segment on Power Boat Television – testing and reviewing pre-owned yachts.
During the ‘off season’, Mike prefers to head south to escape the cold whenever he can and has been enjoying sailing and skippering charters in many areas of the Caribbean including Belize, the British Virgin Islands, St. Martin, and many other areas of the West Indies.
