Builder's Description
This 1984 Western Way 19 is built in the Classic Launch style. This design offers the convenience of operating while seated with the added protection of the hood with an isinglass windshield or with the top rolled back standing at the helm-- all without spoiling the appearance by requiring a high ungainly top. The cockpit deck is self-draining through transom scuppers.
Construction
The hull laminate consists of two layers of 1oz mat, 1 layer of 1808 fabric, 1 layer of 1oz mat, 1 layer of 5mm coremat, 1 layer of 1808 fabric and one layer of 3/4oz mat and allgripped. Two 2x12 glass encapsulated stringers and ¾” floors are installed to stiffen the bottom. The resulting hull is strong, stiff and light.
The deck laminate is similar except that a 3/8” balsa core is incorporated in place of the coremat. The guard rail is PVC with stainless steel half oval. The deck hardware is also stainless steel.
The trim is varnished mahogany around the cockpit coaming, the console, and cushioned helm seat. The bench seating forward with cushions offers storage hatches below.

Kathe grew up Southwest Harbor, Maine, in and out of her father's and grandfather's boat shops and on the water in various vessels. Sailing on inland lakes at camps and on the family boats out of Southwest Harbor were a large part of summers with family and friends. While growing up, the family summer vacation was going to the Friendship Sloop Races in Friendship Harbor on their 1904 Friendship Sloop, Dictator, along with many local sails with family and friends. Kathe, her husband, Dan, live on Mount Desert Island, and they both are USCG Master Captains enjoying sailing their 1965 Friendship Sloop, Old Baldy, and cruising the nearby harbors and islands aboard their Bunker & Ellis lobster pleasure boat, Susan Margaret.
