Description
1985 Scanmar 35 Center Cockpit Cruiser – “Now Voyager”
If you’ve been searching for a serious bluewater-capable cruiser with classic Scandinavian lines, proven sailing performance, and major recent upgrades, “Now Voyager” deserves a close look.
Designed by renowned Swedish naval architect Rolf Magnusson, the Scanmar 35 has earned a loyal following for its strong construction, responsive sailing characteristics, and comfortable offshore cruising layout. This fractional-rig center cockpit sloop combines performance and practicality in a package equally suited for coastal cruising, offshore passages, or extended liveaboard adventures.
For the past 20 years, “Now Voyager” cruised the Chesapeake before her current owners—a family of five—completed significant upgrades in 2024 and sailed her north to Maine, a testament to both her capability and reliability. She is currently located in South Bristol, Maine, and scheduled to launch in late May.
Major 2024 upgrades include:
• NEW Volvo Penta D1-30 diesel engine (approx. 350 hours)
• NEW keel bolts
• NEW mainsail
• NEW marine head
• NEW bilge pumps
• NEW depth sounder
• NEW propane system fixtures
• Custom-built propane locker
• Force 10 propane stove/oven installation
• Updated galley plumbing and faucet
• Repaired and reset hatch covers
• Updated VHF radio
• Some new running rigging
• New ground tackle including CQR anchor with chain and Danforth storm anchor
• Added bow roller
• Updated cabin lighting
• Bilge restoration and repainting
Additional equipment includes roller furling headsail, autopilot, refrigeration, and a well-laid-out galley with excellent storage.
Under sail, the Scanmar 35 is known for confident handling, excellent balance, and strong upwind performance thanks to her deep fin keel (5’8” draft). Owners consistently praise these boats for their solid feel offshore and rewarding sailing manners in a variety of conditions.
Below deck, the beautifully finished mahogany interior provides a warm, traditional feel rarely found in modern production boats. The three-cabin layout comfortably accommodates up to six people, making her ideal for family cruising or extended trips aboard. The spacious salon offers generous seating, while the center cockpit design creates excellent separation between living spaces.
The Scanmar 35 remains one of the more respected Swedish cruising designs of her era—well-built, capable, handsome, and increasingly hard to find in this condition with this level of recent investment.
“Now Voyager” is turnkey and ready for her next adventure.

Tristram Coburn has been sailing since the age of seven and has spent a lifetime on the water teaching, racing, and delivering sailboats along the East Coast and throughout the Caribbean. He has taught sailing in both Maine and Connecticut, raced extensively in the Gulf of Maine, Long Island Sound, and the Mid-Atlantic and completed offshore deliveries to and from the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. Several years ago he and two lifelong friends purchased a Morgan 382 and, after discovering just how much fun ownership could be—much to the dismay of their wives—later added a Morgan 384 to the fleet. What began as a lark to help offset boating expenses grew into the popular YouTube channel BoatFools Sailing, which now has more than 23,000 subscribers and reaches over 100,000 viewers a month. With a mission to get more people sailing and keep older sailboats out of landfills, Tristram and his two pals have spent the past three years exploring more than 100 sailboats of all types and conditions and have helped many of these older classics find new homes. Through BoatFools Sailing, he also brings unique exposure to well-presented listings by introducing interesting boats to a large and engaged audience of active sailors. Combined with his 22 years of professional real estate appraisal experience, yacht brokerage is a natural extension of his work—helping sailors recognize which boats are truly worth saving and setting back out to sea.
