The Modern Hunter
Hunter Marine had a reputation as a builder of boats for sailors who favor creature comforts over performance. The hiring of Glenn Henderson as chief designer and engineer demonstrated Hunter's ever increasing attention to better performance. Henderson carved his reputation as a performance-oriented designer whose creations have fared well on the racecourse. "Our goal was to design a boat that was an exceptionally comfortable cruiser, yet offered outstanding performance and easy handling." The hull is balsa-cored sandwich above the waterline and solid glass with Kevlar reinforcements below. The deck incorporates high quality components. A Selden B & R double spreader mast, in mast mainsail furling, stainless steel arch to support the Harken traveler system which put mainsail controls near the helm while safely out of the cockpit. The Genoa sheets are led port and starboard to the Lewmar self tailing primary winches led through Lewmar ball bearing blocks allowing the skipper to trim from the wheel. The cabin-top winches are Lewmar married to Spinlock XTS rope clutches. Whitlock Direct Drive steering is robust and reliable with great feedback. In 2006 the Hunter 41DS was recognized by Cruising World as the Best Production Cruiser 40 to 44 feet and Best Overall Value Award.
