Description
S/V Escape II
The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409 is one of the most respected mid-size production cruisers of her era — a genuine offshore-capable passagemaker with a comfortable interior, strong sailing performance, and the reliability of a Yanmar saildrive that charter fleets around the world have staked their operations on. She sails like a proper cruising boat, behaves safely offshore, and lives up to what the Sun Odyssey name has meant across eight generations of the lineup.
Escape II stands out in the used market for two reasons that matter: her history and her condition. Privately sailed on freshwater lakes since 2015, first on Lake Champlain, now on Lake Erie, she has been spared the osmotic stress, electrolysis, and through-hull corrosion that accelerate aging on saltwater boats. Her current owner purchased her in 2021 and invested systematically in her between 2022 and 2025, replacing sails, cushions, key mechanical components, and electronics throughout.
The result is a cruiser boat that is ready to sail away now.

Propulsion & Handling
Escape II is powered by a Yanmar 3JH5E 39 hp diesel paired with an SD50 saildrive — the same drivetrain configuration trusted by charter fleets worldwide for its reliability and serviceability. The engine currently shows approximately 2,200 hours. In 2022 the owner replaced the engine blower fan and fitted a new Flex-o-Fold three-blade folding prop, bringing cruising speed under power to 7.5 knots. The Falcor roller furling drum was replaced in 2023. No bow or stern thruster fitted.

The helm stations were updated in 2024 with a Raymarine electronics with an MFD at starboard and new instruments to port. A new VHF radio with cockpit extension was installed in 2022.

Escape II is well-equipped for extended cruising comfort. Two Cruisair heat/air conditioning units provide climate control below. A Silent Air wind generator and solar panel support the house bank at anchor.

New LED anchor, steaming, and deck lights were installed in 2025. The Quick 40L water heater was replaced to OEM spec in 2025, as were the aft shower pump and bilge float switch.
Galley, Salon, and Accommodations
Below decks, the Sun Odyssey 409's three-cabin layout offers a well-appointed owner's cabin forward, two guest cabins aft, and two heads — one electric, one manual. The salon received new custom upholstery in 2024 and presents well.
- ENO 2 burner propane stove with oven and broiler.
- Deep well top loading refrigerator with built in freezer compartment (12V)
- Microwave (new 2020)
Deck and Cockpit
The cockpit is comfortable and well-organized for shorthanded sailing, with new custom cockpit cushions (Sunbrella taupe, 2022) and a new Sunbrella taupe bimini (2025). The OEM dodger was replaced in 2022 (Sunbrella taupe), and a new cockpit speaker was added the same year. Dinghy davits with superstructure are fitted.
Sailplan
A complete new sail inventory was installed in 2022: Elvstrom main, jib, and stackpack, all in Sunbrella taupe. In 2023 the owner added an asymmetrical cruising spinnaker with dousing sock, rounding out a capable sail wardrobe for both coastal and offshore passages.
The Facnor roller furling drum was replaced in 2023.
Safety and Anchoring
New LED anchor and steaming lights were installed in 2025. The cockpit VHF extension provides bridge-to-cockpit communication while underway. The depth transducer was replaced in 2025.
- Quick vertical windlass with helm control and hand-held remote at bow
- Galvanized plow anchor (35 lb.)
- 75 feet of chain and 100 feet of anchor rope
Escape II is a well-documented, freshwater-sailed example of one of the most capable production cruisers in her size class. The investment made between 2022 and 2025 means the next owner steps aboard a boat that is ready to sail. Offered for sale through Current Yachts; contact us for your private showing.
