Description
Exceptional Freshwater Heritage • Meticulously Maintained • A Rare Opportunity
There are production sailboats… and then there are Gozzards.
Designed by legendary Canadian yacht designer Ted Gozzard and built in Ontario, the Gozzard 44 has earned an international reputation as one of the finest semi-custom bluewater cruising yachts ever produced. Every vessel was individually crafted with uncompromising attention to detail, resulting in a yacht whose quality, strength, and timeless beauty continue to set the benchmark decades later.
Calypso represents an exceptionally rare opportunity to own one of these coveted yachts in truly outstanding condition.
For 16 years, she has enjoyed the tremendous advantage of freshwater cruising on the Great Lakes, where she was seasonally used, professionally stored, and meticulously maintained. Even more impressive, she was cared for by Gozzard Yachts themselves during that time—a level of factory stewardship seldom found on any brokerage yacht. The result is immediately apparent. Her existing owners purchased her at the Gozzard facility on Lake Huron and had Gozzard Yachts update her and prepare her for cruising the Caribbean islands. Unfortunately, a medical condition put an end to their plans before they could start. Their loss can be your gain.
From her beautifully crafted cherry interior and immaculate engine room to her gleaming joinery, cabinetry, and deck hardware, this yacht reflects decades of conscientious ownership by knowledgeable yachtsmen who understood the importance of preventative maintenance rather than deferred maintenance. Every space aboard speaks to pride of ownership.
The Gozzard 44 was designed for sailors who refuse to compromise. Her robust hand-laid fiberglass construction using Corecell (one of the first Gozzard yachts to use Corecell), long-keel hull, protected rudder, cutter rig, generous tankage, and comfortable motion offshore have made her one of the most respected passagemakers in her class. In addition, she is equally admired for her warm, handcrafted interior, innovative cockpit design, and remarkable liveaboard comfort.
Unlike many yachts of this vintage that have spent decades in tropical saltwater environments, Calypso’s freshwater history has preserved her systems, finishes, and overall condition to an extraordinary degree.
Opportunities to purchase a Gozzard with this level of provenance simply do not come along often.
Whether your dream is the Great Loop, extended coastal cruising, Caribbean passages, or offshore adventures beyond the horizon, this Gozzard 44 offers the confidence that only exceptional design, meticulous maintenance, and careful ownership can provide.
This is far more than another brokerage listing. It is a rare chance to own one of the finest examples of one of North America’s most respected semi-custom cruising yachts.
If you’ve been waiting for the right Gozzard, your search may well be over.

Construction
The hull is molded from female production tooling. The laminate is a “sandwich” cored construction. The “SP Systems” Corecell foam core increases panel stiffness, strength, impact resistance and sound/thermal insulation while maintaining an excellent weight-to-weight ratio. Most of the weight is saved by designing around the cored laminate is then re-applied in extra skin thickness on either side of the core, making the laminate schedule, in the words of the SP engineers, “robust in the Gozzard tradition”. Only marine grade vinyl-ester laminating resins are used in the hull laminate.
The hull laminate is constructed of knitted double bias E-glass RM (0-90) and XM (45-45) cloth. Additional reinforcing is utilized in the bow, trail-board, chain plate, mast step and transom areas. The core material measures 3/4” in thickness and has a density of 6 pounds per cubic foot. The core is installed using both vacuum bagging and hand-laid techniques. The core runs from the cove stripe to approximately 10” from the centerline. The coring material is eliminated and replaced with a solid glass laminate in the areas of the sheer line, centerline, keel, rudderpost and thru-hulls.
The deck, like the hull, is finished with Cook “Buffback” Off White gelcoat and is a molded FRP sandwich construction with ½”, ¾” and 1” SPS Corecell. In areas where equipment is installed, the coring material is eliminated to create a solid laminate. The outer and inner skins are built up to a thickness of approximately ¼”. The deck flange is solid and built up to ½” in thickness. Extra reinforcing is added to the cleat, mast step and winch attachment areas as well as high-stress areas and corners. The hull deck joint is bedded in 3M 5200 and bolted on 6” centers with 5/16” stainless steel machine screws with ny-lock (aircraft) nuts.
All main or structural bulkheads are constructed using cored FRP laminates for superior strength, low relative weight, and total rot resistance. All bulkheads are glassed to the hull, and later the deck before the interior trim work is installed.
While some manufacturers install a grid-like structure with the cabin sole screwed down onto the tops, Gozzard uses a closed grid structure by combining the floor and the stringer surfaces into assemblies. This not only makes the floor solid underfoot; it also compartmentalizes the areas you cannot easily access normally. The center section is accessed with removable bilge panels to provide access to tanks and pumps.
